Seventh of the Chieftains to rule the Dúnedain after the loss of Arthedain, Arahad was the son of Araglas of the line of Isildur. Early in his reign, the Watchful Peace came to an end as Sauron returned to Dol Guldur, and soon afterwards the White Council was formed. Some years later, Orcs that had been secretly establishing themselves in the Misty Mountains suddenly revealed themselves, and the roads eastward into Eriador became all but impassable. Arahad's reign lasted sixty-eight years; he was succeeded by his son, Aragost.

The date of Arahad's birth appears only in The History of Middle-earth volume XII, The Peoples of Middle-earth. It cannot therefore be considered completely reliable.

In the name Calenhad, the -had ending simply means 'place' or 'location'. Conceivably the same meaning applies to the name Arahad, but 'royal place' seems a strange name for a Chieftain. |
