A rare term used to describe the Dark Lord Sauron. Our only recorded use of this name is by Gollum, when he angrily denied that he had been sent to seek the Ring by the 'Black One'. In this he was at least speaking the truth as he understood it: Gollum believed that he had escaped from Mordor without help, and was seeking to recover the Ring for himself. In this he was mistaken, and he had in fact been released from the Black Land to lead the way to the One Ring for its maker.
