Commonly called 'Nick', Bowman was the fourth child of Farmer Tolman Cotton. He came of age - at the conventional Hobbit age of thirty-three - in the year III 3019 (S.R. 1419), the year of the War of the Ring, when the Shire was under the power of Sharkey's Men. With his father and brothers, Bowman was among the first to join rebellion against Sharkey and his ruffians. Armed with axes, they went eagerly to the conflict that would become known as the Battle of Bywater.
The great part played in that battle by Bowman's family saw the Cottons rise in fame and wealth over the years that followed, though how this rise affected Bowman specifically is not recorded. As the younger brother of Rose Cotton, Bowman would go on to become Sam Gamgee's brother-in-law when Rose and Sam married after the War.
When Sam Gamgee thought back to his childhood as he travelled through Mordor, he remembered paddling in Bywater Pool '...with Jolly Cotton and Tom and Nibs, and their sister Rosie' (The Return of the King VI 3, Mount Doom). This list gives all of Bowman's brothers and sisters, but leaves out Bowman himself (who would have been listed as 'Nick'). Perhaps this tells us something about Bowman's childhood (or perhaps Sam simply forgot about Bowman, or Nick, Cotton in his reverie).

Bowman's name is not explicitly explained, but it seems inescapable to that it simply refers to a bowman or archer (as does 'Bowman' as a real family name). Bowman's name was perhaps influenced by the long historical tradition of archery in the Shire (Hobbit bowmen are recorded as early as III 1975, or 375 by the Shire-reckoning). The name does not seem to be literal - in the single instance where Bowman is described as carrying a weapon, he is carrying an axe rather than a bow.
