The text of The Lord of the Rings offers little specific information about the creation of the Brown Lands, other than Treebeard's rather vague report that they were formed 'in the time of the war between Sauron and the Men of the Sea' (The Two Towers III 4, Treebeard). In itself that might refer to various conflicts throughout the Second Age. However, in his Letters Tolkien is explicit that this region (where the gardens of the Entwives had once been found) was destroyed during the War of the Last Alliance, at some point between II 3429 and II 3441. (For Tolkien's full comments on the topic, see The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, No. 144, to Naomi Mitchison, dated April 1954.) |
