Some of the more important divisions of the Elder People

Of the two peoples who were considered the Children of Ilúvatar, it was the Elves who came into the world first. They were thus the Firstborn, and this fact is recognised in various references to their seniority: most commonly they are called the Elder Children, but also the Elder Kindred, Elder Race and Elder People. They had existed in the world for many thousands of years before the Second People emerged: Men, who are therefore known as the Younger Children of Ilúvatar in contrast to the Elder People.
