Hasufel

The horse of Rohan that bore Aragorn

A horse of Rohan, Hasufel was large of stature with a dark grey coat, from which he took his name (Hasufel means 'grey coat'). He was originally the steed of a Rider named Gárulf, a follower of Éomer who rode with his Marshal to intercept a band of Orcs that had been reported in the northern parts of Rohan. The Rohirrim found and defeated the Orcs, but Hasufel's rider Gárulf did not survive that encounter.

Shortly afterward, Éomer's éored encountered three travellers. These were Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, who were pursuing the same Orcs in hope of rescuing Merry and Pippin. Éomer was convinced to give them horses, and the riderless Hasufel became the mount of Aragorn (while the horse Arod would be ridden by Legolas and Gimli). Aragorn rode Hasufel across Rohan, from Fangorn Forest to Edoras and then on to the Hornburg. After the battle in Helm's Deep, Hasufel bore Aragorn to Isengard, where the Three Hunters were finally reunited with Merry and Pippin.

It was on the journey back from Isengard that Aragorn encountered a band of his fellow Rangers from the North, and those Rangers had brought with them Roheryn, Aragorn's own horse. After this point, Aragorn rode Roheryn, and Hasufel's name slips out of the histories. Legolas and Gimli continued to ride Arod, so perhaps Hasufel was led with the company after this time, or perhaps he was stabled in Rohan - probably at Dunharrow when the company passed through that place on their way to the Paths of the Dead.
