Holfast Gardner

The evidence for Holfast's home being in Bag End, or at least on Hobbiton Hill, is circumstantial but compelling. We know that Holfast's grandfather Sam Gamgee lived there with his family, and Holfast's father Frodo was Sam's eldest son and heir, so he presumably inherited Bag End after Sam's departure from Middle-earth in IV 61 (S.R. 1482). We can't be sure that Holfast would have inherited it in turn, but the fact that Holfast's own heir was known as Harding of the Hill - the Hill, presumably, where Bag End stood - seems to imply that Holfast did indeed follow his father as master of Bag End.

The name Holfast is not directly explained, but it follows the pattern of Hamfast, which we know derives from Old English hámfoest, meaning 'home-fast' or 'stay-at-home'. Taking that as a model, and considering that Holfast Gardner was a Hobbit, his name can be inferred to come from a construction like holefoest. That would translate as 'hole-fast', describing one who prefers to stay at home in his Hobbit-hole.
