All the members of Kalimac's (or Merry's) family would have had equivalent Hobbit-names, but for the most part these are unknown. His father would have had the surname Brandagamba (translated 'Brandybuck') but the original form of his given name 'Saradoc' is not recorded.
The Hobbit usually known as Meriadoc Brandybuck, or simply as 'Merry', was not actually known by that name in the Shire itself. Rather, the name 'Meriadoc Brandybuck' is a partial translation and partial anglicisation of that Hobbit's original Westron name, which was Kalimac Brandagamba.
The original family name Brandagamba (literally 'border-buck' or 'Marchbuck') is merged with the river-name 'Brandywine' to give the familiar 'Brandybuck'. If the personal name Kalimac had any original meaning, that meaning had been forgotten by the later Third Age, though it is noted that the shortened form Kali could be interpreted as 'jolly'. Following a convention of giving Celtic names to the members of this family, Tolkien chose the historical name Meriadoc, on the basis that it could be abbreviated to 'Merry', mirroring the meaning of the shortened Westron Kali.
