Like many of the other names Tolkien gave to his Dwarves, the name Náin comes from the Old Norse poem Völuspa. Its meaning is unclear, though the name may be connected to the Old Norse for 'kinsman'. It may also be relevant that nain is the French word for 'dwarf', a fact that Tolkien must certainly have known, though this apparent connection is probably no more than a coincidence. |
