The Encyclopedia of Arda - an interactive guide to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien
Location
A general name for early-flowering plants, which would therefore be found widely across Middle-earth, but particularly associated with the land of Ithilien
Species
Numerous disparate flowers, but likely including the dog daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare), the cowslip (Primula veris) and the primrose (Primula vulgaris)
Pronunciation
'pri'm-e-roles' (the 'e' sound is pronounced as a distinct vowel, so the first syllable sounds like 'prim', not 'prime')
Meaning
Shortened from Latin primula veris, 'first of spring'

Primeroles

"Primeroles and anemones were awake in the filbert-brakes..."
The Two Towers IV 4
Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbits

An old name used for various types of early-flowering plants (the name gave rise to later 'primrose', though it is used in a more general sense in the quotation above). They were found by Frodo and Sam growing among the many plants and flowers of Ithilien. It's implied that they could also be found elsewhere in Middle-earth (for example, Frodo's mother Primula took her name - or at least its anglicised version - from another term for this group of flowers).

Incidentally, the 'filbert-brakes' mentioned in the quotation above are also derived from an old plant name; in this case the reference is to thickets of wild hazel.
