Skinbark

One of the oldest of Ents

One of the three oldest Ents of Fangorn Forest who, with Treebeard and Leaflock, had walked the world since the most ancient times, and still survived at the end of the Third Age. Skinbark, whose name is a translation of Elvish Fladrif, had a particular affinity with birches, and of the three most ancient Ents he and his people lived closest to Isengard. He dwelt on the slopes of the mountains that rose to the west of Saruman's fortress, at the head of the Wizard's Vale.

Saruman brought Orcs to Isengard, and the Ents of the mountains suffered under their ravaging axes. Many of the mountain trees were felled, and Skinbark himself was injured, while others of his people were slain by Saruman's Orcs. In the face of this onslaught, Skinbark withdrew from the invaders into the highest parts of the mountains to dwell among his beloved birches in the heights.

Skinbark's retreat into the mountains meant that he had little to do with his fellow Ents, and he played no part in their ultimate revenge upon Saruman. Some of his followers, however, were more hasty and readier to fight, and notable among these was Quickbeam (or Bregalad). One of Skinbark's people who had seen his own beloved rowan trees destroyed by the Orcs, Quickbeam was more than ready to go to war, and eagerly joined his fellow Ents in their destruction of Isengard.
