The eighth month of the Shire Calendar, also used in the calendar of Bree. It ran for thirty days, as did all the months used in the Shire, and it was approximately equivalent to modern August (though due to the offset of the year between a modern calendar and that used in the Shire, Wedmath actually ran from modern 24 July to 22 August. In the calendars used more widely in Middle-earth, Wedmath corresponded closely to the month named Úrimë or Úrui.
Wedmath was named the 'weed month' because weeds grew in profusion during this period of the year. On the Shire Calendar it followed the month of Afterlithe and was followed in turn by Halimath (but in Bree these months had different names, so Wedmath was preceded by Mede and followed by Harvestmath). The arrangement of the days in the Shire Calendar meant that Wedmath would always begin on a Trewsday and end, thirty days later, on a Hevensday.
