Wetwang

The great marshland beneath the Emyn Muil

Map of the Wetwang

A wide wetland that formed beneath the Falls of Rauros, where the waters of the Great River Anduin cut through the hills of Emyn Muil and roared down onto the plains below. Below this point in its course, Anduin was met by the sluggish waters of the Entwash, which branched and divided into a network of streams that in turn flowed into the Great River at intervals over nearly a hundred miles of its length.

This great inflow of water, from the falls and the Mouths of Entwash, caused a watery land to form around the feet of the waterfall, and spread far outward from Anduin's course. The resulting waterland, extending eastward for some seventy miles, was known as the Wetwang (an archaic Common Speech name translating Elvish Nindalf, and meaning 'field of water'). Beyond it was an even deeper stretch of impassable marshland, the Dead Marshes, a place haunted by the images of those slain there during the War of the Last Alliance.

Notes

1

There is actually a real place named Wetwang in Yorkshire, England, though that name has a slightly different derivation. Where the wet in Tolkien's Wetwang simply carries its natural meaning of 'wet' or 'watery' (as shown by its Elvish equivalent nin) the real place-name actually has nothing to do with water. Instead it derives from Old Norse vaétt, 'legal action', so the full name refers to a field where trials would take place.
