An empty land in the north of Beleriand, lying between the Forests of Brethil in the west and Neldoreth in the east.

In his linguistic appendix to The Silmarillion, Christopher Tolkien suggests that the name of this land contains mbar, meaning 'dwelling' or 'house'. That would seem strange given that we're told explicitly that Dimbar was a land empty of inhabitants, and indeed it seems that the name in fact derives from dimb, 'sad', with the -mbar ending probably no more than a coincidence. |
