Houses of the Dead

The Halls of Mandos

One of the varied names for the Halls on the western edge of Aman to which the Vala Mandos summoned the spirits of the dead. The final fates of these spirits varied according to their race: those of Men were sent on to a mysterious fate, while the spirits of Elves would usually be re-embodied within the Undying Lands. The Dwarves held that their spirits, too, were summoned to their own halls within the Houses of the Dead.

The name 'Houses of the Dead' is also used for the Tombs of the Silent Street of Minas Tirith. For more on that topic, see the separate entry for those Houses of the Dead.
